another move

It's been a really crazy month. After spending every evening selling furniture, packing, or cleaning it's nice to be in Oklahoma at our new place. Now we're in the process of unpacking, but it's about a tenth of our total belongings so it's not so bad.

During the last few weeks I have had some issues breastfeeding, namely that my nipples have been really dry and occasionally bleed. I've been putting lanolin on them constantly but they seem to only get worse. This all started after I had some painful clogged ducts and I was pumping and nursing like mad to try rid of them

I was checking them out last week when I noticed they were really red. I looked online to see if I could figure out what was going on and they looked a lot like those with thrush. Apparently women sometimes get a yeast infection on their nipples when their baby has thrush or a yeast infected diaper rash. Quentin doesn't have either of those things but I figured I should get it checked out before we moved.

The earliest appointment I could get was for Thursday at 3:15 pm (we moved on Friday). The physician's assistant I met with said she couldn't tell if it was a bacterial or yeast infection so she wrote me a prescription for an all purpose cream that could be used for either one and was safe for the baby.

On Friday afternoon I went to Wal-Mart to get it filled and the pharmacist said they don't fill compound prescriptions there and recommended I go to Giant. I stopped into Safeway and they also said they couldn't fill it because they didn't carry one of the ingredients. Giant said that I needed to go to a compounding pharmacy and said that she didn't know of any on the area. I HAD to get back to packing and so my prescription is still unfilled.  I guess I need to start calling around Oklahoma City to see if I can find a pharmacy that will fill it.

I had decided to take as much of my frozen breast milk from the freezer as I could fit in my lunch cooler with us to OKC. I left it in the freezer while we packed so it would remain frozen as long as possible and of course I forgot it. I don't know what to do about it and I haven't alerted the renters about it yet. It seems like such a waste to throw it out.

Quentin has had chest congestion and the first night we were on our road trip west he was waking up every hour or so wanting to nurse. We didn't end up leaving our condo until 9:00 PM (8 hrs later than expected) so we didn't get to bed until 2:30 AM. I was super tired plus my nipples were sore. I was really missing all that stored milk. It seemed like everything was working against me at that moment.

While we were packing Quentin started napping better because I just let him cry until he fell asleep. I had to let him have a nap so I could get things done since he's low crawling everywhere now I have to constantly try and keep him out of trouble. He slept a lot on the car ride here but it was hard to stick to any sort of schedule. It will be interesting to see how things work out now that we can start settling in.

The place we're staying in has an indoor pool so I'm excited to start taking Q on a regular basis. There are plenty of places for walking so hopefully the weather isn't too bad out. I really dislike the cold and I don't think I can get myself to go for a walk if it's too chilly out. Yesterday it was 68 degrees. I'm not sure if that's normal, but I was so excited about it.

That's a bummer about your breast milk!! Maybe you can have them put it on dry ice and ship it to you? Or maybe you could have them donate it locally? There is a group called "Human Milk for Human Babies" (they have a FB page and likely one in the D.C. area if there's one in Wyoming...). You could donate it there... Hope the soreness goes away soon - sore nipples makes it so difficult to enjoy such a wonderful part of being a mommy! Hang in there!

labor & delivery

I'm finally getting around to posting my labor and delivery story.  After I got an epidural I wrote down what had happened so far and after the baby was born I wrote down the rest to make sure I remembered everything.  Since it's been two weeks of not a lot sleep and my memory of the event is somewhat drowned out with all the new mommy stuff, I'm just going to type what I wrote. February 21, 2011 - Monday We got up at abut 6 AM after a short night of lots of cramping.  I was hoping to go into labor or at least make some progress, but no luck.  I was still at 1 cm when the doctor measured me at about 8:30 am.  I got the oxytocin and a bulb to open up my cervix at about 8:45 am.   pre-pain, Nurse Lynn At first the contractions were so bad I wanted to cry and then they slowed down and it was more tolerable, but not to the point where I could walk around and I still threw up from the pain.  It got really bad at 1:10 when they gave me the Pitocin. ...

top 10 reasons I love breastfeeding

I have to preface this list with that it is MY list. Not all these things will apply to everyone.  I am aware that some women have a really hard time breastfeeding, some stick with it and some don't and they would have their own lists of why they like it or not.   Quentin and I have had a really easy time with it for whatever reason.  It's not because of anything I've done.  I do believe it is something all new moms should try.  Not like you tried it once and it didn't work out, but really truly try and get help from a lactation consultant if you need to.  It's totally worth it if you can get it to work for you.  If you decide not to for whatever reason I won't judge you.  I was bottle fed myself and I turned out just fine. 10. Bigger boobs.  I've always had really small breasts and have worn padded bras pretty much since puberty and kids made fun of small cup size.  I like how breastfeeding has made me more proportional a...

breastfeeding & weaning

Quentin has started walking!  Everyday he becomes more and more confident and walks more and more.  He's at about 50% crawling, 50% walking now.  My parents are in town and my mom commented how stable he is for just starting out. I can't really compare him to other kids since I only have the one.  I think he was just waiting until he felt completely confident. He has been eating a lot better lately.  He even ate some tilapia a couple times, but it had to be off of other people's plates for some reason.  I also started feeding him baby food again, which he gladly eats.  He likes it and it's healthy for him so I see no reason to force him to eat other food.  If he's 14 and still wants to eat baby food I guess that will be ok (he definitely wouldn't be overweight), but my guess is that he probably will give in to peer pressure before that happens. Last week he didn't want to take any morning naps, but this week he's been much more interested...
