stroller drama

The drama with strollers continues.  We purchased the First Years Wave Stroller and we really liked all the cool features and especially the look of the stroller.  We also bought the First Years Via Car Seat, which we also really like.  It has a lot more cushion and the quality is quite good, especially for the price.

The problem arose when we couldn't get the car seat to snap into the stroller frame and once we did we could not get it back out.  It was really hard and you had to push down on the back of the seat while simutaneously pulling up.  We figured that it had something to do with the latch on the stroller since the car seat snapped into the base very easily, plus the latch on the seat of the stroller was bent.  So we sent it back and almost immediately received a new one last Friday.  I put it together and it worked really well with the stroller seat snapping in super easy and I loved the bassinet, very cute.  Everything was really smooth with the stroller except the car seat still wouldn't snap in very easily and it was really difficult to take out.

We decided that it must be the latch on the car seat so we sent that one back too.  We got a new one on Tuesday, but it was still hard to get in and out and there isn't even a baby in there.  I really don't want to have to be messing with such things with a newborn in the seat (it's not like it's the stroller seat which you put on before you place the baby in the seat).

We can use the seat easily with the universal adapter which snaps in beautifully, but the idea of using a stroller from the same company is that you don't have to use the adapter.  My husband called them yesterday to see if we had gotten a lemon or if this is just how it works. They said they would look into it and then left a message saying that we shouldn't be using it with the adapter, which totally misses the point.

The thing that I don't like about the stroller is that the frame is really quite heavy and bulky and I can't imagine using it by myself, especially if we're planning on getting a lighter umbrella stroller too.  We were reading the bible, I mean Baby Bargains, to see what it says about which stroller we should get.  That particular section is organized by lifestyle, so it recommends certain strollers according to how you will be using it.

We determined that we fall in to the "mall" category since we won't be taking the baby on the metro, hiking trails, dirt roads, or out running.  For this it recommends buying a stroller frame like the Snap-n-Go and then has some specific recommendations for strollers to buy when the baby is bigger.  It says that we should avoid heavy, bulky strollers with big wheels and we need one with a large basket and cup holders -- the Wave misses every mark.  We have come to the conclusion that the book is probably right, which is really sad because we like the stroller, but it's just not really practical for what we'll be using it for.

The issue we are now facing is that while we would prefer to keep our First Years car seat, none of the stroller frames specifically state that they can be used with our car seat and First Years does not sell any.  If we can't find a stroller frame that works with our car seat we'll have to find another car seat, which is quite sad.

In other baby product news, today we will be receiving the new chair we bought on Black Friday along with the Fisher-Price Space Saver Swing & Seat - Ocean Wonders (Deep Sea Blue) we bought on Cyber Monday (my sister-in-law wanted to buy this for us so she's sending us the money to pay us back).  Hopefully we won't have any issues with these :)

Why don't you buy a car seat and stroller that don't go together? You can just take the baby out of the car seat and place it in the stoller. The most important things I would look for in a stroller are the weight and size to make sure it will fit nicely in the trunk, and also nice smooth pushing. You don't want a bulky width stroller that is too heavy to lift in and out of the car. Good Luck, G-ma Wendy

labor & delivery

I'm finally getting around to posting my labor and delivery story.  After I got an epidural I wrote down what had happened so far and after the baby was born I wrote down the rest to make sure I remembered everything.  Since it's been two weeks of not a lot sleep and my memory of the event is somewhat drowned out with all the new mommy stuff, I'm just going to type what I wrote. February 21, 2011 - Monday We got up at abut 6 AM after a short night of lots of cramping.  I was hoping to go into labor or at least make some progress, but no luck.  I was still at 1 cm when the doctor measured me at about 8:30 am.  I got the oxytocin and a bulb to open up my cervix at about 8:45 am.   pre-pain, Nurse Lynn At first the contractions were so bad I wanted to cry and then they slowed down and it was more tolerable, but not to the point where I could walk around and I still threw up from the pain.  It got really bad at 1:10 when they gave me the Pitocin. ...

top 10 reasons I love breastfeeding

I have to preface this list with that it is MY list. Not all these things will apply to everyone.  I am aware that some women have a really hard time breastfeeding, some stick with it and some don't and they would have their own lists of why they like it or not.   Quentin and I have had a really easy time with it for whatever reason.  It's not because of anything I've done.  I do believe it is something all new moms should try.  Not like you tried it once and it didn't work out, but really truly try and get help from a lactation consultant if you need to.  It's totally worth it if you can get it to work for you.  If you decide not to for whatever reason I won't judge you.  I was bottle fed myself and I turned out just fine. 10. Bigger boobs.  I've always had really small breasts and have worn padded bras pretty much since puberty and kids made fun of small cup size.  I like how breastfeeding has made me more proportional a...

breastfeeding & weaning

Quentin has started walking!  Everyday he becomes more and more confident and walks more and more.  He's at about 50% crawling, 50% walking now.  My parents are in town and my mom commented how stable he is for just starting out. I can't really compare him to other kids since I only have the one.  I think he was just waiting until he felt completely confident. He has been eating a lot better lately.  He even ate some tilapia a couple times, but it had to be off of other people's plates for some reason.  I also started feeding him baby food again, which he gladly eats.  He likes it and it's healthy for him so I see no reason to force him to eat other food.  If he's 14 and still wants to eat baby food I guess that will be ok (he definitely wouldn't be overweight), but my guess is that he probably will give in to peer pressure before that happens. Last week he didn't want to take any morning naps, but this week he's been much more interested...
