in the womb

So more on the ultrasound yesterday.  The form said that I was supposed to drink 32 ounces an hour before my appointment.  I wanted to make sure that my bladder was full enough so I drank about 48 ounces a couple hours ahead of time.  By the time we actually arrived at the place I had to wobble in I had to pee so bad.  I had a bit of a wait and when it was finally my turn the technician said that she would hurry so I could go to the bathroom.  When she first put the ultrasound wand on my belly she said that the baby wasn't far enough along to do the nuchal translucency test and said that I could use the restroom and would do a vagina ultrasound since we were already there.  I wasn't too worry because we had caught a glimpse of Little Bean on the monitor and she looked like a baby not like a clump of cells like last time so I knew at least she was progressing.

When she started the vaginal ultrasound she said that the baby was indeed big enough to do the test and that the excess urine had made the baby look smaller.  Next time I'm not going to try so hard.  So she did some measurements and we saw and heard the baby's heart beat and the little legs kicking.  I had a perma-grin on my face.  I can't believe that little person is inside of me!  She said everything looked good, which is all I needed to hear.

We stopped by the library on the way home and I came across a video called "In the Womb" by National Geographic and we watched it last night for Family Home Evening.  It's a pretty incredible movie and I recommend it  I learned a lot about the development of the fetus and the science behind it all.  Seeing the baby makes it a little more real than reading my weekly updates from the four different websites that send me stuff.

I'm definitely looking forward to when the baby can hear my voice (and my husband's) and I think it's so cool that the baby will recognize my voice from the womb.  I had no idea that the amniotic fluid takes on the flavor of the food the mother eats so that the baby gets used the tastes and will take better to the breast milk, which also has flavor from the mother's food.  It's amazing all that goes on for the baby to prepare to come into the world.  It makes me appreciate the details our Father in Heaven thinks of when caring for his children.

Oh what a throw-back to my first trimester this has all been!! I was lucky enough not to be really sick throughout the pregnancy but was extremely tired the whole first trimester. I felt tons better basically as soon as I hit my 2nd trimester. As to books - I didn't read Baby Wise or Baby Whisperer...trust your gut, though, once baby gets here. I think as helpful as all the books are or can be, your baby is an individual. He or she may not respond to a particular parenting method. (We love attachment parenting methods...they work well for us.) I recommend "Happiest Baby on the Block"...there's a video you can watch on YouTube. It was magical for us! :)

I also <3 prenatal yoga! It really helped me throughout the pregnancy and even into labor!

I agree with Amanda. There are SO many books and opionions on things. You do what is best for you and your baby. The NT is something I did not have to do separate it was a part of my 20 week fetal scan. Did you find out about your insurance yet? For me with Federal BCBS maternity was covered at a 100% except I had to pay the difference for the room since I wanted a private room not semi-private.

labor & delivery

I'm finally getting around to posting my labor and delivery story.  After I got an epidural I wrote down what had happened so far and after the baby was born I wrote down the rest to make sure I remembered everything.  Since it's been two weeks of not a lot sleep and my memory of the event is somewhat drowned out with all the new mommy stuff, I'm just going to type what I wrote. February 21, 2011 - Monday We got up at abut 6 AM after a short night of lots of cramping.  I was hoping to go into labor or at least make some progress, but no luck.  I was still at 1 cm when the doctor measured me at about 8:30 am.  I got the oxytocin and a bulb to open up my cervix at about 8:45 am.   pre-pain, Nurse Lynn At first the contractions were so bad I wanted to cry and then they slowed down and it was more tolerable, but not to the point where I could walk around and I still threw up from the pain.  It got really bad at 1:10 when they gave me the Pitocin. ...

top 10 reasons I love breastfeeding

I have to preface this list with that it is MY list. Not all these things will apply to everyone.  I am aware that some women have a really hard time breastfeeding, some stick with it and some don't and they would have their own lists of why they like it or not.   Quentin and I have had a really easy time with it for whatever reason.  It's not because of anything I've done.  I do believe it is something all new moms should try.  Not like you tried it once and it didn't work out, but really truly try and get help from a lactation consultant if you need to.  It's totally worth it if you can get it to work for you.  If you decide not to for whatever reason I won't judge you.  I was bottle fed myself and I turned out just fine. 10. Bigger boobs.  I've always had really small breasts and have worn padded bras pretty much since puberty and kids made fun of small cup size.  I like how breastfeeding has made me more proportional a...

breastfeeding & weaning

Quentin has started walking!  Everyday he becomes more and more confident and walks more and more.  He's at about 50% crawling, 50% walking now.  My parents are in town and my mom commented how stable he is for just starting out. I can't really compare him to other kids since I only have the one.  I think he was just waiting until he felt completely confident. He has been eating a lot better lately.  He even ate some tilapia a couple times, but it had to be off of other people's plates for some reason.  I also started feeding him baby food again, which he gladly eats.  He likes it and it's healthy for him so I see no reason to force him to eat other food.  If he's 14 and still wants to eat baby food I guess that will be ok (he definitely wouldn't be overweight), but my guess is that he probably will give in to peer pressure before that happens. Last week he didn't want to take any morning naps, but this week he's been much more interested...
