appointments and condos

It feels like all I've been doing lately is setting up doctor's appointments.
  1. I finally found a doctor in the area that can fit me in for a physical before February so I can get some cash off of my deductible.  One doctor I called wanted to schedule me for February 15 -- two days before my due date...that's not going to work!
  2. I went to my 34 week OB appointment on Monday and complained to my doctor about this stabbing pain I've been having in my lower back.  She recommended going to a masseuse -- who am I to argue with that?  I set up an appointment Monday night to get a prenatal massage at a place my friend Sara went to while she was preggo for next Monday.  I'm really looking forward to that one.
  3. I set up an appointment with another pediatrician in the area for a prenatal consult.  It's a smaller practice with only two doctors.  I figure we'll use the other one we visited as a back up and we can always switch if we find a place we like better.  The big pediatric practice we went to is great because they are very accommodating, but I kind of like the idea of going to a family practice where it isn't like a daycare center in the waiting room and they shuffle you in and out and you see up to 11 different doctors.
  4. We have our dentist appointments on Friday.  It's been a long time coming.  We had issues with our insurance in that no doctor took our crappy insurance expect for horrible ones.  Everyone at my work with the same insurance had a similar problem so we switched to PPO this year so we could get a good one.
  5. I have all of my OB appointments set up to my 40th week!  I start going every week in two weeks so next week will be my last week not seeing my doctor until after the baby's born.  It's getting so close!
Our appointment on Monday went really well.  She said the baby's heart beat is great, regular and a perfect speed.  She also said she could hear him rolling around, but I couldn't feel him.  He moves around so much it's strange to think that he has time to move around when I don't feel him.

He's been jabbing me in the side a lot lately and it kind of hurts.  He likes to stretch out and sometimes I feel him at both the top and bottom of my uterus at the same time.  He's a busy little guy, hopefully that doesn't mean he'll be hyper active later on.  She also said that I'm measuring at 35 inches, which is good (it should be with in two inches either side of the number of weeks so 32-36).

Since we're going to be sticking around DC for a year or two or three more than expected we've been looking for new places to live.  We went through our budget with various scenarios to see what kind of place we can afford.  Our goal is that my husband will get a new permanent job with more money in the FAA where he works.  It looks like that is a definite possibility, but we don't know how much money he'll be making exactly.

Since he would be working full time he won't be able to go to school full time and that will cut back on the housing benefits we get through the military and he's also getting out of the reserves after this month so that's also cutting back some money.  We've been trying to save up as much as we can in the meantime anticipating this shortfall in cash after the baby is born, but our monthly income will be drastically reduced.

So we've been looking at condos and townhouses in the area which are surprisingly cheap.  If we put down a good amount of money our monthly mortgage and condo fee will be a lot lower than a rental fee and hopefully we'll be able to recoup that money when we sell it. We'll see, we're still open to renting a place.

Our nightly routine is my husband looking for places to live on-line while I crochet.  I actually crocheted a baby blanket awhile ago but the sides were really wonky so I decided to re-do the whole thing.  So far I've been trying some new stuff and it looks good.  Now I'm addicted.  It's kind of small, I should have made it bigger, but maybe he can lay on it or use it in his crib or something.

I like crocheting and knitting because yarn is so cheap and it's something my grandma used to do and my mom does occasionally.  Next time I make one it will look better as I will have worked out all the quirks in this one.  I still have a quilt I have to finish, but I think I've figured out how I'm going to do it.

Oh prenatal massages are awesome!! I do a massage monthly whether I'm pregnant or not but they're "critical" when I'm pregnant. When I was pregnant with Saoirse, I did an hour massage every other week for the last bit (I want to say last trimester but last couple months sounds more reasonable...). It's about time for me to start every other week massages with this pregnancy...

Good luck with the condo shopping! :) And with the pediatrician shopping. We go to a small-ish practice and the only time we don't see our doc is when Saoirse is sick and needs to be seen immediately but he's out of the office. They have Saturday and Sunday hours which is great...this way, we avoid going to the ER for something that was probably not a big deal to begin with. :)

Which place are you going to? Sugar House or Art of Health? Prental massages are the best!

Also, I would like to know where you are looking at cheap condos and townhomes in the area? Everything we have looked at is pretty expensive but we need to be near the metro and in Arlington or Alexandria.

I'm so excited for my massage. Maybe I'll schedule another one this month :) I'm going to Art of Health, although my doctor recommended SugarHouse - you get 10 more min for your money at AOH so I figured I'd go there, plus you can schedule your appointment online.

Condos next to the metro are more money. We've been looking at places in Alexandria by the Stake Center area. Well, we haven't actually seen any of them, we've been looking on-line and have an appointment with a real estate agent on Friday so we'll see.

There are some short sales and foreclosures by the metro that are cheap, but from my experience they are usually in pretty bad shape. That isn't a totally bad thing though because you can remodel it however you want and sell it for more money.

You'd want to get it checked out before buying it to make sure the structure is good so you don't have to end up pouring tons of money into it.

labor & delivery

I'm finally getting around to posting my labor and delivery story.  After I got an epidural I wrote down what had happened so far and after the baby was born I wrote down the rest to make sure I remembered everything.  Since it's been two weeks of not a lot sleep and my memory of the event is somewhat drowned out with all the new mommy stuff, I'm just going to type what I wrote. February 21, 2011 - Monday We got up at abut 6 AM after a short night of lots of cramping.  I was hoping to go into labor or at least make some progress, but no luck.  I was still at 1 cm when the doctor measured me at about 8:30 am.  I got the oxytocin and a bulb to open up my cervix at about 8:45 am.   pre-pain, Nurse Lynn At first the contractions were so bad I wanted to cry and then they slowed down and it was more tolerable, but not to the point where I could walk around and I still threw up from the pain.  It got really bad at 1:10 when they gave me the Pitocin. ...

top 10 reasons I love breastfeeding

I have to preface this list with that it is MY list. Not all these things will apply to everyone.  I am aware that some women have a really hard time breastfeeding, some stick with it and some don't and they would have their own lists of why they like it or not.   Quentin and I have had a really easy time with it for whatever reason.  It's not because of anything I've done.  I do believe it is something all new moms should try.  Not like you tried it once and it didn't work out, but really truly try and get help from a lactation consultant if you need to.  It's totally worth it if you can get it to work for you.  If you decide not to for whatever reason I won't judge you.  I was bottle fed myself and I turned out just fine. 10. Bigger boobs.  I've always had really small breasts and have worn padded bras pretty much since puberty and kids made fun of small cup size.  I like how breastfeeding has made me more proportional a...

breastfeeding & weaning

Quentin has started walking!  Everyday he becomes more and more confident and walks more and more.  He's at about 50% crawling, 50% walking now.  My parents are in town and my mom commented how stable he is for just starting out. I can't really compare him to other kids since I only have the one.  I think he was just waiting until he felt completely confident. He has been eating a lot better lately.  He even ate some tilapia a couple times, but it had to be off of other people's plates for some reason.  I also started feeding him baby food again, which he gladly eats.  He likes it and it's healthy for him so I see no reason to force him to eat other food.  If he's 14 and still wants to eat baby food I guess that will be ok (he definitely wouldn't be overweight), but my guess is that he probably will give in to peer pressure before that happens. Last week he didn't want to take any morning naps, but this week he's been much more interested...
