more decisions

On Monday we had our regular bi-weekly appointment at the doctor's office.  Everything seems to be going well.  I'm always worried that I'll get chewed out for gaining too much weight since I eat way too much junk food, but the nurse said my weight was good so that makes me happy :)

True to his word, my husband recorded the heart beat and it sounds good - I'm not an expert so I'm not really sure how it's supposed to sound, but it was loud, regular, and seemed to be going at a good speed, plus the doctor didn't say there was a problem.

She answered some questions I had about when is a good time to get an epidural.  She says that it's good to wait as long as you can, but it all depends on the person's labor.  If your labor is long you might want to get it earlier, if it's really short you might not get one at all, so keep an open mind.  It'd be great if my labor was so short I didn't need an epidural, but I'm planning on long and painful so I'll probably get one.

We received two gifts from our baby registry in the mail from good friends yesterday.  One was the Baby Trends frame stroller we wanted and it fits perfectly with our new car seat.  We are very pleased with our selection of car seat and stroller combo.  I'm finding that this selection process is quite personal. Sometimes I see parents with a type of car seat I would never dream of getting, so impractical, but maybe they were looking for something different than me in a seat.

This morning we went to visit the pediatrician's office to see how we like it.  There are pluses and minuses to the practice and I'm not sure if we really like it or not.  Everyone was nice enough.  The nurse almost won me over when she commented on how I must be carrying the baby all in the front because I didn't seem that far along.  My husband didn't get that it was a complement, but I sure took it as one because I feel like I'm carrying it all in my butt :)  There are a bunch of doctors and a bunch of nurse practitioners who work there and you don't have a regular doctor although you can request one that you like if they are available (sort of like the Hair Cuttery).

Mostly I felt like I was going into a daycare facility with all the kids and toys and germs.  The nurse mentioned that you will probably get sick going there and they have a bunch of fees like a no show fee and a late fee.  I'm not a big fan of fees (who is, right?) and this turned me off a little.  They said that there aren't particular hard and fast rules about the fees either so you might be able to get out of them if you sweet talk who ever is giving them out.  I don't like to bother with stuff like that.

So I don't know, I'm not convinced, but I'm also kind of lazy so I guess we'll see which one wins out.  They do have great hours (6 AM-8 PM weekdays, plus Saturday mornings) and are very accommodating in getting you in plus they will most likely have one of their doctors check out the baby at the hospital when he's born.

In other news it looks like we'll be in this area for longer than anticipated.  Hubby got word from the HR person handling his employment as an air traffic controller that the center in Albuquerque has people lined up to get in for up to three years so who knows when we'll be moving. It's sort of funny because ever since we got married we've been saying that we were going to move soon.  We really didn't think we'd stay in DC long enough to complete our one year lease and now we've been in the same apartment for almost three years.

We're now contemplating moving into a two bedroom apartment a little further away from the city and trying to weigh our options balancing work, school, and baby meanwhile trying to make sure we have health insurance.  Being responsible is tough.

labor & delivery

I'm finally getting around to posting my labor and delivery story.  After I got an epidural I wrote down what had happened so far and after the baby was born I wrote down the rest to make sure I remembered everything.  Since it's been two weeks of not a lot sleep and my memory of the event is somewhat drowned out with all the new mommy stuff, I'm just going to type what I wrote. February 21, 2011 - Monday We got up at abut 6 AM after a short night of lots of cramping.  I was hoping to go into labor or at least make some progress, but no luck.  I was still at 1 cm when the doctor measured me at about 8:30 am.  I got the oxytocin and a bulb to open up my cervix at about 8:45 am.   pre-pain, Nurse Lynn At first the contractions were so bad I wanted to cry and then they slowed down and it was more tolerable, but not to the point where I could walk around and I still threw up from the pain.  It got really bad at 1:10 when they gave me the Pitocin. ...

top 10 reasons I love breastfeeding

I have to preface this list with that it is MY list. Not all these things will apply to everyone.  I am aware that some women have a really hard time breastfeeding, some stick with it and some don't and they would have their own lists of why they like it or not.   Quentin and I have had a really easy time with it for whatever reason.  It's not because of anything I've done.  I do believe it is something all new moms should try.  Not like you tried it once and it didn't work out, but really truly try and get help from a lactation consultant if you need to.  It's totally worth it if you can get it to work for you.  If you decide not to for whatever reason I won't judge you.  I was bottle fed myself and I turned out just fine. 10. Bigger boobs.  I've always had really small breasts and have worn padded bras pretty much since puberty and kids made fun of small cup size.  I like how breastfeeding has made me more proportional a...

breastfeeding & weaning

Quentin has started walking!  Everyday he becomes more and more confident and walks more and more.  He's at about 50% crawling, 50% walking now.  My parents are in town and my mom commented how stable he is for just starting out. I can't really compare him to other kids since I only have the one.  I think he was just waiting until he felt completely confident. He has been eating a lot better lately.  He even ate some tilapia a couple times, but it had to be off of other people's plates for some reason.  I also started feeding him baby food again, which he gladly eats.  He likes it and it's healthy for him so I see no reason to force him to eat other food.  If he's 14 and still wants to eat baby food I guess that will be ok (he definitely wouldn't be overweight), but my guess is that he probably will give in to peer pressure before that happens. Last week he didn't want to take any morning naps, but this week he's been much more interested...
