painful commute

Pregnancy has gotten a little more uncomfortable this last week, my last week of my second trimester, I guess it's only fitting.  I have the most difficulty getting to and from work, otherwise I'm usually sitting or laying down a lot so I don't have any problems when I'm at home or at work.  I end up standing a lot on the metro because people here are awesome (I'm really hoping the people in New Mexico are nicer) so my ankles and legs swell and my balance is not great.  I try to position myself on the platform so that I can get in a less crowded car, but it's not always possible to get a seat.

Then walking to and from the metro from work is getting really hard.  I'm used to speed walking and walking up and down the escalators and it drives me crazy to go so slow, but every time I walk even a normal pace my stomach hurts, I get out of breath, and occasionally get side cramps as though I was trying to run a marathon.  My belly feels like I've been pushing it out for an extended period of time and I wish it would go back in.  Maybe my lungs expand too much or something, I'm not sure why it's only when I'm walking it does this.

Last night was by far my worst commuting experience since my first trimester.  It was painful getting to the metro and even though I was able to snag a seat I wasn't feeling great on the ride to the bus stop.   Looking back I think I was too hot, even though I didn't have my coat on.  I must have jumped up too quickly to get off the metro and then walking up the stairs might not have been a good idea because by the time I got to the exit I felt whoosie and the familiar black cloud started covering my sight and bead of sweat covered my brow.  I felt like I was going to pass out so I went over to an open area and sat on the floor next to a railing.  It was much cooler since the air from outside was coming down the big escalator.  I waited until I felt well enough to make it to the bus stop where I waited on a bench and felt a little nauseous.  Luckily, I was able to get on a bus that wasn't crowded after a bit of a wait and I made it home ok.

This really freaked me out and I read up on passing out during your second trimester and stomach pains.  It seems like it's pretty normal as the baby is growing and your body is stretching and it wasn't painful to the point of crying or anything.   Plus I was diagnosed with anemia so that doesn't help, although I have been taking the additional supplement everyday that the doctor recommended.  It's recommended that you take it easy. I feel like I already take it pretty easy for the most part of the day and since I take this journey to and from work twice every day it shouldn't be a big deal.  I have my doctor's appointment on Monday morning and Beanie has still been kicking occasionally (he passed the 10 kicks in 2 hours test).

This morning I stayed home an extra two hours and rested and took it super slow getting in, although the walking was still a little painful.  It was nice because there was hardly anyone on the bus/metro.  I figure if I lived in say Wyoming this wouldn't really be an issue since I would drive everywhere and if I did walk, it would be a nice slow leisurely stroll around Wal-Mart.  My husband is going to pick me up from work today since his class was cancelled tonight so that will be nice.  I'm not sure what a long term solution will be, or if it will last very long, maybe I won't have to worry about it much longer.  If it continues like this, this third trimester is going to be a doosy.  I'm sure it will only get worse from here.

I know what you mean! Since I get off early I was always able to get a seat but one time I stayed late at the doctor's and no one have me their seat. I was so mad! I took off my coat and stood in front of everyone breathing heavy until after a few stops one lady finally offered me her seat. People are so inconsiderate! You should ask for those disabled seat bc you are covered under that, I did and most people won't fight with an angry hot pregnant woman! ha lol
I hope you feel better. It was hard for me too. I ended up teleworking a month before I was due bc of the walking. I was so swollen and the week before I splurged and drove to work. You think teleworking is an option for you? I bet your doctor would write you a letter...mine did and I got approved. Hope you are feeling better!

Hey, I just decided to check out your blog again and wanted to say I totally feel you on all of it. Metro sucks. I was also anemic during pregnancy and nearly passed out fairly often. On the positive side that actually happened less as my 3rd trimester progressed. Definitely make sure you get lots of iron in your food and drink lots of water. A few times at work I actually had to borrow someone's office so I could lay down on my side until I felt better. Yup, pregnancy's awesome, huh? Do what you gotta do and take it slow. I walked the half-mile to work up until week 39, so that part is doable, you just have to take it easy and give yourself extra time. Also finding reasons to leave early is pretty awesome :-).

labor & delivery

I'm finally getting around to posting my labor and delivery story.  After I got an epidural I wrote down what had happened so far and after the baby was born I wrote down the rest to make sure I remembered everything.  Since it's been two weeks of not a lot sleep and my memory of the event is somewhat drowned out with all the new mommy stuff, I'm just going to type what I wrote. February 21, 2011 - Monday We got up at abut 6 AM after a short night of lots of cramping.  I was hoping to go into labor or at least make some progress, but no luck.  I was still at 1 cm when the doctor measured me at about 8:30 am.  I got the oxytocin and a bulb to open up my cervix at about 8:45 am.   pre-pain, Nurse Lynn At first the contractions were so bad I wanted to cry and then they slowed down and it was more tolerable, but not to the point where I could walk around and I still threw up from the pain.  It got really bad at 1:10 when they gave me the Pitocin. ...

top 10 reasons I love breastfeeding

I have to preface this list with that it is MY list. Not all these things will apply to everyone.  I am aware that some women have a really hard time breastfeeding, some stick with it and some don't and they would have their own lists of why they like it or not.   Quentin and I have had a really easy time with it for whatever reason.  It's not because of anything I've done.  I do believe it is something all new moms should try.  Not like you tried it once and it didn't work out, but really truly try and get help from a lactation consultant if you need to.  It's totally worth it if you can get it to work for you.  If you decide not to for whatever reason I won't judge you.  I was bottle fed myself and I turned out just fine. 10. Bigger boobs.  I've always had really small breasts and have worn padded bras pretty much since puberty and kids made fun of small cup size.  I like how breastfeeding has made me more proportional a...

breastfeeding & weaning

Quentin has started walking!  Everyday he becomes more and more confident and walks more and more.  He's at about 50% crawling, 50% walking now.  My parents are in town and my mom commented how stable he is for just starting out. I can't really compare him to other kids since I only have the one.  I think he was just waiting until he felt completely confident. He has been eating a lot better lately.  He even ate some tilapia a couple times, but it had to be off of other people's plates for some reason.  I also started feeding him baby food again, which he gladly eats.  He likes it and it's healthy for him so I see no reason to force him to eat other food.  If he's 14 and still wants to eat baby food I guess that will be ok (he definitely wouldn't be overweight), but my guess is that he probably will give in to peer pressure before that happens. Last week he didn't want to take any morning naps, but this week he's been much more interested...
